A traditional stone built pub located in a very attractive spot alongside the river. It’s a little off the beaten track, but is only a short drive from the A39 and is well worth making a detour to find. Besides the pub, there is a small beer garden next to the river, although it might be best to avoid this if you have dogs or small children in tow – it is unfenced and there is a vertical drop of several feet down to the water.
Internally it consists of a public bar to the right and a lounge to the left. The public bar was full of friendly locals and a number of dogs were sprawled out across the floor. A pool table was off to one side as well as a small fireplace, and although the appearance was perhaps a little basic, it was still very pleasant. The lounge bar was a little cosier although most tables appeared to be laid up for food. Another stone fireplace was in here along with a wood burning stove, a pile of logs stacked up ready for the colder weather and a pair of brass antlers that were mounted on the wall above it.
Beers on tap were Quantock Pale Ale, Otter Bright, Exmoor Ale and Exmoor Gold. Ciders were well represented with Thatcher’s Gold, Thatcher’s Haze, Orchard Pig Reveller and Addlestones. All in all, well worth a visit.
