Less traditional, nowadays - more like a sports bar, is my impression on a Saturday early evening. Just two cask beers on, with an unknown pump clip turned around. I swerved the Bass and went for Allendale Pennine Pale (NBSS 4, £4.50/pint). Cheaper and busier than the nearby pubs, but they're each - all three - fulfilling a need for different customers, and doing it well. This is a GBG pub, but at this time of day it's hard to spot anyone but me drinking cask beer - and I only had a half. Maybe it's different at other times.

Traditional pub with some panelled, carpeted throughout and inlaid tiled fireplace. Lots of comfortable seating and also a small beer garden. Serves food and there were quite a few people taking advantage of the lunch time offer. Four handpumps on, I enjoyed the Allendale Golden Plover and the Jarrow Rivet Catcher.
