This pub/hotel has recently re-opened following a refurbishment. In a major horse racing town, rooms feature horse racing wallpaper and many horse racing pictures. A TV in the front room was unsurprisingly showing horse racing. The walls and the bar are now painted a rusty orange colour. Further rooms to the rear of the bar also have a horse racing theme. Meanwhile, there are also a few picnic tables to the front of the pub overlooking the Market Place.
The house beer Richard III Pale is a rebadged Wensleydale Semer Water. Theakston Best Bitter is also a regular ale. Guest were Tetley's Cask & Hambeldon Stud Blonde & Nightmare Porter. Brooklyn Stonewall IPA is available on keg and the cider is from Somersby.
Food is served and both children and dogs are allowed in. Despite the refurbishment, both ladies and gents toilets seemed to be without lighting. Perhaps the bar staff had forgotten to turn them on.

A lovely traditional inn on the market square, the main room at the front has been opened out from what I guess would have been two smaller rooms, with the bar counter on the right hand side. There's an open fire, a stone flagged floor and the bar itself has plain wood above and painted panels below, with hooks.
There are five hand pumps with John Smiths Cask, Black Sheep Bitter, Theakstons Best Bitter, Daleside Old Leg Over and Wensleydale Semer Water. The atmosphere is welcoming and unpretentious and my half of Black Sheep was in good condition. There's a picture of a battle scene above the fire, with Richard, Duke of Gloucester's motto translated from the French: "Loyalty binds me"

The middle pub on the south side of the Market Place comprising the bars of a small hotel, it has two bars in public bar and lounge style. A double fronted building, on entering there is a single room but the left side is divided off by a half height wooden screen where a wall would originally have been. The counter is to the right and some steps lead down to the other bar, both front sections are in lounge style with a mass of horse racing pictures and some of staff from one of the local stables. The front room has the popular red/cream with dark woodwork colour scheme and is traditionally furnished with bench seats, tables and stools. At the rear and with a second entrance is a large plainer room with comfortable seating and a sparcely equipped counter. The front counter has the two operating handpumps with well kept John Smiths and a better guest, plus the usual kegs from the Strongbow/Guinness/Fosters/1664/John Smiths Smooth portfolio and it adds one from Theakstons and from Tetleys. A friendly pub and reasonably priced. Richard III lived in the castle behind the pub when he was the Duke of York.
