Strongers . left this review about The Old Sun Inn

The Old Sun Inn looked quite inviting with picnic tables and some greenery behind a waist high wooden fence in the cobbled front garden area. The entrance opens onto a dinky little snug with a table and two chairs that are served by a hatch from the bar. The central bar is actually very big and oddly shaped as it serves different seating areas around the pub. To the left of the entrance is a wooden floored lounge where some diners were sat in the seating at the front. A counter runs up the right where it faces a snug with large tables to the left. At the rear is a carpeted seating area adjacent to an exposed stone back wall. To the right is the wooden floored Club Room with more seating and a grandfather clock. And finally in the front right, accessed from the Club Room and the front entrance, is the main bar area with flagstones around the counter and wood flooring towards the front where seating can be found. There was some background music playing in this main bar. Standard keg was available alongside Peroni and the nine hand pumps I counted across the bars were drawing Bradfield’s Farmer’s Stout, Jaipur, Wainwright and Pedigree. The service was very friendly and I found the layout of this 17th century coaching inn to be very interesting, so good for a couple of pints and a nose around before moving on.

The weather was fine on our visit, so it was nice to sit out in the pub's front patio area near the tree. A good mix of diners and drinkers on our visit, with even more people out in the rear courtyard area. This 17th Century former coaching house had lots of different areas inside and I especially liked the tiny snug, right in front of the main entrance.
Five handpumps, with four in use serving Jaipur, Pedigree, Wainwright and Wincle Hen Cloud, a quaffing English IPA.

Nice pub with an old feel to it. Lots of small nooks and crannies. Pretty standard choices from the Marston's range with Sunbeam, 61 Deep, Wainwrights and Old Empire on when I called. My Sunbeam was off and was changed without fuss. The Wainwright was spot on. I liked it here and would happily call again.

My review of 2014 needs revisiting, because the atmosphere in here is now completely different - or maybe it's different day, different vibe. There are six hand pumps, with beers all from the Marstons stable, but my main memory of this visit was the loud pop music pouring from loudspeakers in every corner. No thanks.

I too didn't mind it in here though I preferred the Cheshire Cheese next door.

The previous reviewer must have been particularly unlucky to call in here on a Sunday and find no hand pulls on. There are six hand pumps on the bar and on the occasion of our visit (also on a Sunday) five of them had beers available. It was fairly quiet, but then so were the nearby Swan and the Cheshire Cheese. I like it here, with its complicated layout of little private rooms, and nooks and corners where you can settle down for a conversation or just to read the paper over a pint. The beers we had were in good condition, if a little unadventurous. We called into all three local pubs during our brief stop in Buxton and enjoyed them all.

A very old pub which has been done up inside to look its age, with distressed timber, nicotine-stained walls and refurbished church pews. Old doors have been erected as partitions, so the seating is in lots of little nooks, giving a cosy feel to the place. There were two Marston's beers on handpump when I visited: Burton Bitter and Pedigree, plus Jennings Worlds Biggest Liar.
