My first visit since 2015, and the main change is the recent demise of the owner. He had already passed the pub on to his brother and nephew. The latter told me the pub has been in the family since his great-grandparents. He and his father are gradually straightening things out, though the main task today was cutting logs. A sign in the porch window said that the pub was open but the front door locked, so come round the back and interrupt the logging. Which I did, and had a very good pint of Bass (NBSS 4, £4.00/pint). As the only customer at exactly opening time, I was bombarded with questions about where I was from and where I was going. Luckily I remembered to take some photos of the interior. I drove here in a hire car (thanks for asking) and was on my way to Wales for a camping holiday. I hope I can find another way to get here next time - lovely pub, but a long way from anywhere.

Having passed this pub on my bike a few times, and not been sure whether it was just not open, or in fact permanently closed, I finally got it together to make a point of arriving here during opening hours. It's a fine ride here from Buxton over the Staffordshire Moorlands with fine views of the Roaches near Leek in the distance. The landlord, somewhat eccentrically clad in shorts, was very welcoming, and his customers all joined in the conversation, which mostly centred on where we'd come from and why. It turned out that nearly everyone there was from Sheffield, too.

There were two ales available at the time of our visit, with one hand pump vacant; I had Ran Ales Flya (from Fenton in the Potteries), and failed to make a note of the other. The beer was a good malty brew and went down a treat after that bike ride.
