This is a nice little back street bar that I had on a to do list back in 2017 but when we got here it was closed. I was walking towards the Oxford Bar tonight and suddenly realised I was on Thistle Street, so here I am. Two cask beers on, so I had a half of each. Stewart Brewing Edinburgh Gold is a strangely bland 4.8% beer, while Bellfield Lawless Village IPA is a subtly hopped 4.5% pale that seems to stretch the category of IPA in yet another direction. Both were in very good condition (NBSS 3.5 to 4). The bar is small, with seating at a premium - I think there were a dozen people at most, and I was left with the short stool at the end of the counter, where the floor has a change of level just before the toilets. (The cleanest and most fragrant toilets I've seen for a long time.) The bar manager saw me writing some notes and - intrigued by my drinking two halves - asked if I was doing a comparison. We had a bit of a chat about Scottish breweries and I left with a good impression of this bar.

This traditional pub is in the oldest street in Edinburgh's Georgian New Town. Hanging flower baskets adorn the exterior along with signs advertising the what the pub has available. The interior has large ornated mirrors and an open working fireplace. Plenty of seating in a Chesterfield style buttoned leather. There are signs above the bar advertising the drinks and prices available. There is also a small patio beer garden at the rear. At the time of visiting on offer were Ossian from the Inveralmond brewery - Jarl from Fyne Ales - Belhaven Best - Asahi – Japan’s number 1 beer - Guinness extra cold - St Mungo lager which was awarded the bronze medal at the 2019 Scottish beer awards and not forgetting the West of Scotland lager (Albeit in an Edinburgh pub) Tennent’s lager. There is midweek live music.
