Rex Rattus left this review about Mel's Cafe Bar
In a moment of reckless abandon I ventured into this bar to see what it was like, as I had walked past it many times. Oddly enough there was no real ale to be had, although they did have Meantime London Pale Ale on tap (£2 a half), which was actually not bad. There was a “freshly squeezed orange juice” machine on the counter, with the attendant pile of oranges, although no price on display. Food was available (I reckon that’s possibly its main business) but I didn’t get to see a menu. It’s bare-boarded of course, the back wall is exposed brickwork, and the furnishings seemed to be mainly cheap looking plasticky chairs and formica topped tables. Some loud pop music was being played, which of course forced people to speak louder and thus elevate the noise levels.
I’m not sure what anyone finds attractive about this place, but clearly it is to a lot of people’s taste as it was doing a brisk trade on Thursday evening. It must be me. I’m not likely to visit again.
