This was an emergency addition to our list after finding that the Combermere was not open. The woman who served us here, who was very friendly and welcoming, confirmed that the previous afternoon hours at the other pub have been discontinued, with Monday to Thursday now being 5pm opening. This one was a more than adequate substitute, with the interesting interior prompting me to take a few photos. On the beer front, there were the golden versions of Hobgoblin and Wainwright, plus Banks's Bitter, so nothing terribly exciting, but all the beers we sampled were in line with about a 3.5 average on the NBSS scale, as was the case with most pubs on the day. The Banks's was poured with a tight head and was a degree or two colder than at the Stile, where it was served in an oversized glass with a big, frothy head.

The Clarendon Hotel is located next to the Bank’s Brewery which Carlsberg Marston's Brewing Company (carnts) have just earmarked for closure in Autumn 2025 after 150 years of brewing. What a surprise! The interior of the pub has split-level seating areas and a counter up the right that supports standard keg alongside San Miguel, Estrella and Brooklyn Pilsner. There are also three hand pumps, Bank’s Sunbeam was off (ffs) which left their Amber alongside Wainwright. For some reason the barman was dressed as a bouncer, or the bouncer was serving. The pub was pretty empty and it’s away from town so I’m not sure why a bouncer was needed. Maybe he wasn’t a bouncer at all, just a very smart meaty little chap. There’s a pool table and a carpeted snug and some long low tables and sunken seating, worth having a nose around.

I really enjoyed our visit to this 2019 Good Beer Guide pub today with it's well appointed tidy rooms. Variety of seating styles, old fireplaces and some original stained glass windows plus a history of the brewery written on one of the walls and plenty of old photographs around the walls too. Enjoyed wandering round inside and the seating area at the back overlooks the brewery itself. We tried Wainwright Altitude which is brewed as cold cask so that it can be served cold without becoming hazy, and it was fine. The rest of the pumps were the usual Marston's range.

This is clearly a pub that has been around for some time in fact my old Black Country beer guide says it was built in 1851. Externally the upper Clarendon Hotel signage remains intact but some really tacky looking stuff has been added below it listing the six breweries now under the Marston umbrella. I'd prefer not to be reminded of them thank you.
My old beer guide also adds a comment "Spoiled By Progress" with the loss of public & corridor bars due to refurbishment. This comes as no surprise as Marston seem to have trashed or closed a large part of their estate. It's now just one big room with different areas. To cap it all there are also TVs just about everywhere which were all switched on.
Their are six hand pumps plus some weird looking contraption selling the boring Lancaster Bomber. The other six were Banks's Mild, Bitter & Sunbeam, Pedigree, Wainwright and Hobgoblin Gold. I went for the Mild (£2.75) which was in good nick. Where did it all go so wrong for this brewery?

Decent looking pub right by the brewery with the full range of Bank's beers. You would expect it to be in good condition and it was.

Banks's brewery tap on the corner of Brewery St, it's a spacious open plan pub with a profusion of drinking and sitting spaces, some of which offer a degree of privacy. Finished in the usual sort of all purpose mock Victorian style it has a mural of the brewery in one corner and looks to be quite a popular place. Beers come of course from the W&D / Marstons range and my mild was in very good nick as it should be for a brewery tap.

Rather formal open plan largish pub tap for the Banks's brewery next door. parking is limited. Feels rather square and Georgian, its a nice enough place for a visit. Pictures of the brewey adorn the walls. The beer should be good, it hasn't had to come far, and indded was, and a choice of the growing range.

Its nice if nothing spectacular, but a fine pub.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Clarendon Hotel

A solid-looking building, with a less-ornate exterior than one might expect for a pub located right outside the brewery. The layout is a bit unusual, retaining a traditional bar to one side and the remnants of a homely lounge with fireplace at the back. However, the main seating areas to either side of the door have been refurbished in a semi-modern style (but the murals showing the Banks's Brewery are quite interesting). At least 10 handpumps, and whilst not all of these were in use, there was a good selection of Marstons-ownerd beers including several seasonals (e,g, Brakspear Buzz, £2.60) in addition to the essential Banks's Bitter and Mild.

Ale Monster left this review about Clarendon Hotel

This is Banks’s (Marston’s) “unofficial” tap house, by this I mean that although they have never claimed that it is the brewery tap, it is directly in front of the brewery and it has more Marston’s ales on hand pull than any other Banks’s pub that I know of. It’s a nice Victorian corner pub, the interior is large and has a bit of a strange layout but I shall try my best to describe it as accurately as I can. As you pass through the main door (which is down the side of the pub in Brewery Lane) you will see a large open plan lounge area with modern decor to your left, a smaller more traditional lounge area down a couple of steps on your right and a very small traditional public bar to the left of the main lounge. The large modern lounge has a small bar counter, three flat screen TVs and several modern paintings/photos of flowers. The more traditional lounge area has a nice old fire place, a TV and more of the same pictures of flowers. The public bar is directly behind the bar counter in the main lounge, but it also has its own small bar counter. This is where I normally head when I visit, as it has a nice large fire place with a steel surround embossed with the Banks’s lion emblem, leather seating, a large flat screen TV showing sky sports news and Wolves FC memorabilia on the walls.

Regular ales are Banks’s Mild and Bitter (two in the lounge and two in the bar), Marston’s Pedigree and five changing guest’s from the Marston’s portfolio such as Brakspear, Jennings, Ringwood or Wychwood beers. They seem to make a point of having one of Jennings seasonal beers on.

This is a decent pub and a former GBG entry, the interior is a little strange, maybe due to its mix of modern and traditional décor but the nice bar area makes up for any modern tat. Always worth a visit if you’re near the Chapel Ash side of the city centre simply for the range of ales. Also it should be noted that there are a couple of good pubs nearby.

Well what can I say, it's just like Soupy says. However the small room at the back of the bar has leather seating which is ripped with the stuffing falling out, which is a bit of a mess. There are loads of interesting pictures around the walls and it also has a quiz machine and a function room for hire. When I visited last night the beer range was exactly the same as when Soupy visited. It was about 6.30 and despite the pub being very food led there was no-one eating in any of the rooms. The menu is very Wetherspoonalike with special offers and 2 for 1 type of stuff. I had a pint of the Wizards Staff which was served way too cold, almost lager temperature. It's not my favourite pub in Chapel Ash I'm afraid
