David Walton left this review about Mad Hatter

Visited previously as the Gibson on 7/9/21 so a tad under 3 years ago. Then very much a cocktail venue but now somewhat more balanced! The place only opened a few weeks ago after being closed for a couple of years.

The venue is quite small. A rectangle with the bar counter occupying the far left corner of the rectangle. The place is quite ornate and has a few stools on the side of the bar counter facing the door. Three tall round tables with mirrored surfaces occupy the area to the left of the door and there is a long single dark green leather banquette along the right hand wall with four small similar rectangular tables in from thereof with low stools to sit the other side of. A small ledge at the back right corner with some tall stools complete the seating arrangements. A light jazzy music played at a nicely subdued volume made the place very ambient on my visit.

So draught beer in previous life now replaced by six taps providing Camden Hells and Camden Pale, orchard Pig Reveller cider, Guinness, goose Island IPA and Stella. Not a stellar range but much improved as a venue as a result.

The proprietors were very friendly and very experienced in the bar game. Think this place will do OK. Only an average rating from me based on the Meg offering but I would pop in again.

Roberto Campese left this review about Il Cicchetto

Hi there, I'm Roberto and with my girlfriend Marilena we are the proud owners of il Cicchetto. We took over the bar last June 2011 and step by step we are trying to improve our small business. We have now differents kinds of drought beer ( Stella black, kozel, vedett extra blond, beck's vier, Guinness extra cold and Sambrooks wandle ale).
we also have bottles of beer and ciders and international wine list. We do cocktails and Italian food ( homemade pasta, cakes, sandwiches, pizzas, bruschette and bar food).
We kept the nice pub shell and created a typical Italian bar inside.
So, just pop in and visit us!

Steve of N21 left this review about Chequers

Very small Victorian corner pub which has been closed more than it’s been open in recent years.
Currently open and trading, as About a year ago it was taken over again and is now called Il Cicchetto and owned and run by a couple of Italian gents.
Unfortunately the very nice tiled Victorian exterior (with the original Chequers pub sign still hanging) is now not matched by the lounge bar style interior makeover that has happened at some stage.
As well as the usual chrome taps dispensing San Miguel, Carlsberg, and Guinness there’s one lone Adnams Broadside, but this has been reverse clipped on the two occasions I’ve bothered to wander in, and I got the impression it wasn’t likely to have anything passing through it any time soon.
So this is very much now a small lounge bar inside a traditional pub skin, and as such not my sort of thing. But I hope it works for the current owners and they can make a go of it, because better utilised than shut, if only for continuing the external Victorian facade and tiling.
