Previously The Victoria Hotel, this country-cottage style GBG pub is an 18th Century building was given its current name in the 1980s when a hoard of the eponymous coins was found during renovation work. There is a tiled floor hidden by carpet in places, wooden beams, and fireplaces with wood burners. The ambiance is marred by annoying gaming machines, but the seating was comfortable and there is free wifi. The clientele are a mix of student-types, CAMRA members and intelligent humans, though the staff (at least the one that served us) is a bit Stepford. Four ales and a cider on, I had pints of Otter, Upham Punter and fff Moondance. The Moondance was excellent (but it does tend to be one of my favourites so maybe I'm biased). I found the Punter a bit metallic, but as I hadn't had it before I can't say whether that's how it's supposed to be, while the Otter was pretty good. I also had a pint of he cider which was excellent too. This pub should be an essential part of any visit to this area.
