More or less the same line up beerwise as Will's visit. Two from Thornbridge Jaipur and Lord Marples, good to see they are supporting a local brewery. The interior has changed dramatically since my last visit and a lot more people are using the place. The interior is high end and glad to see the staff are very down to earth.

The interior of the hotel has been rearranged since my visit in 2017, with what used to be the bar now a cafe, and doing a good trade among the casual shoppers of Bakewell at noon on a cold but sunny January Thursday. The bar is now on the left, with windows looking out on the road towards Monyash. It's an opulently furnished room, with more chandeliers than I've seen in one place before. The bar counter is more conventional, though the bar chairs have to be seen to be believed. The beer offering, from two hand pumps, is local Thornbridge beers only: Lord Marples and Jaipur. My server was dissatisfied with her first attempt, and ditched it in favour of the second, which she topped up without having to be asked. £2.90 for a half of 5.9% Jaipur seems better value than the £5.40 I paid for a pint of 5% Abbot in the Castle, and it was also a better beer in better condition (NBSS 3.5). A crawl of Bakewell should include this one, I reckon.

A handsome old building on the roundabout in Bakewell's centre, the Rutland Arms is a traditional country hotel. On entering the foyer there is some seating near a fire on the left, the hotel reception and rooms straight ahead and the bar on the right, in what looks like an extension of the original building; the floor is at a slightly different level, so a potential trip hazard. There are three hand pumps on the bar, with two from Thornbridge (Jaipur and Made North) and one from Peak Ales (Chatsworth Gold). I went for the Made North, a very pale bitter but not overly hoppy, as some Thornbridge beers can be. It took a while to pour, as the hand pump was not working properly, but the beer was in good enough condition. Whether it justified forking out £2.30 of my hard earned cash for half a pint is another matter. But this is a hotel rather than a pub, and besides it was the only drinking establishment that seemed to be open at 11am and saved me having to wait in the cold for my bus to Stanton in Peak.

Accommodation - Clean, comfortable but overpriced.
Food - Good and well presented, but overpriced.
Beer - Only one pump in use serving a very overpriced (£3.90 a pint), mediocre Chatsworth Gold.
Return visit - A definite NO.
Try the Manners Hotel a couple of hundred yards down the road - Far superior in every way.
