A delightful country pub, but as nearly all of that type have to be these days, very much food led. I was fortunate in that my cycle ride coincided with the afternoon lull, so I had the small room on the right entirely to myself. As a bonus, the background music was having an off day, so it was a most enjoyable visit for me, enhanced by the various shades of blue in the upholstery, curtains and paint. My beer was pretty good too, the Howardian Gold being in very good condition and served at just the right temperature too (NBSS 3.5, £4.60/pint).

Definitely a dining pub and definitely nestling under the North York Moors near Ampleforth and Old Byland abbeys. It’s a long thin building most of the length being dining areas. Entering from the car park through a porch with seating gives a choice of, to the left a small bar called the poachers or to the right another small bar and the dining areas. First right is the toilet. The counter in the right hand room has two pulls, Theakston’s Best Bitter and Helmsley Howardian Gold from just up the road. A clutch of keg taps provide Guinness, Aspalls, Estrella Damm and an own badged lager, “Stapylton Fox” I believe it is from Camerons. The beer was too cold but well kept and pleasant after it reached quaffable temperature. A nice old building in white washed stone with stone floors and professional friendly staff, but you’re unlikely to find them behind the counter as they are the waiting staff as well. The punters on my lunchtime visit were largely middle class, middle aged and older, and obviously apart from myself, well heeled. If you’re going there to eat you really need to book.
