Bucking Fastard left this review about Shipmans
Walking down Drapery can be like visiting a zombie apocalypse if a lot of the users and beggars are hanging about,so Shipmans is a real refuge .A lot of money has been spent on the refurb, but lots of charm still exists and there is a CAMRA listing for it's interior.
You first come to a front snug for one table, the wooden clad bar runs down a narrow corridor with a few high tables opposite while the rear of the pub, which opens onto Drum Lane and the Market Square, is now a back lounge.Furnishing is smart ,with modern wall paper and it feels calm and tidy. The muzak was a little loud but the selection was solid enough. There are two upmarket dining rooms on the first floor called The Drapery and The Drum Room.
The CAMRA listing mentions a seperate bar area off Drum Lane with hertiage features but maybe closed on my Sunday visit or has it been lost ?
There were two handpumps serving Fullers London Pride and Phipps NBC Red Star (NBSS 3.5).Nothing too exciting but service from the young team was friendly.Without prompting I was offered a 50p CAMRA discount.Craft keg offerings from Beavertown but Gamma Ray and Neck Oil are now becoming ubiquitous.
Worth a squint if in the area, well done to the owners for reviving this town centre pub after many years of closure.
