With no other pubs or bars in the village, Hickleton Village Hall Club is the only place offering beer in the village.
Closed a couple of nights each week, it only opens at 7:30pm on a Tuesday & Thursday and at 7pm on a Friday. At weekends, it opens earlier at 4pm. As such, I had planned it as my final stop of the day in South Yorkshire, having double checked the opening hours and confirming that I could enter what is effectively a private members club.
Despite being a club, it has a very relaxed and comfortable feel inside. In fact, it feels more like a country house, or at the very least a country club. The local denizens are quite well heeled and despite it not having been open for long, about a dozen people were already in, with a good mixture of both sexes.
The barmaid offered a warm welcome to a stranger, or perhaps she was looking out for the visitor from London who had contacted her in advance?! I was also pleased to see a couple of lesser spotted real ales. Black Sheep Special Ale was on, alongside a New English CF-262 IPA from Acorn, which I chose. It was slightly too bitter for my tastebuds, but was well kept.
News had just broken of the Queen's passing, which created a slightly more sombre atmosphere than could have been expected. Nevertheless, this is a very well appointed club and I'd certainly recommend a visit here.

I was all ready to proffer my Camra membership card, even though it's out of date, but I got the same sort of welcome I'd expect in any pub. In fact, a better welcome than I've had in most of the pubs I've been into recently. This lovely building in local stone is a pleasure to be in - it has bare floorboards and tastefully painted maroon and cream walls, which colour scheme is repeated in some tiles affixed to the face of the wooden bar counter. There's a footrail to the bar, and a few stools nearby to encourage drinkers. Other furniture is mostly of the dining variety, but these are classy dining tables - none of your chunky pine, thank you very much. On the walls are some framed line drawings in ink, and there's a very nice fireplace on one wall and a dresser against another. A slight disappointment was that only one of the four hand pumps featured any ale - two others had pump clips turned around, so it seems I was just unlucky. I had a half of the Holts IPA, which was OK but nothing special. Nevertheless I enjoyed being here and would certainly not hesitate to call in again when passing.
