A 13th century rural pub in a picturesque location. Despite featuring in the latest Good Beer Guide, this pub appears to be very much food-focused and we were immediately asked if we had booked when we approached the bar, a sure sign of pretentiousness.
The place felt very cold inside, not helped by the stone walls. There may have been a fire, but it clearly hasn't been lit yet this autumn. There is a small bar area, where you can also eat. This extends into a further seating area to the left. Further beyond that is an outdoor area, where a few groups appear to have gathered, but which we didn't explore. We sat in the bar area near the entrance door. The pub hadn't long opened (12:30 on a Sunday) and yet there was still some leftover food on our table.
The real ale range was surprisingly boring for a Good Beer Guide pub. HPA & Butty Bach is the choice. A guest beer would have been a nice addition. A little disappointing overall, despite its lovely location.
