This former pub is now a Waitrose supermarket. The nearby micropub is named in remembrance of this one.

An English Pub that sells no ales. Poor very inefficient bar staff & management who actually do not know the difference between ale & Larger. A destructive refurb' a few years ago destroyed virtually all the 'Englishness' of the original interior. There is passable though slightly run-down garden where you can enjoy a 'very English' hookah pipe. The building is in need of some maintenance & looks neglected. Apparently the Thia restaurant on the first floor is considered fairly good.

I spent many a happy hour here back in the early 'seventies but it slowly slid downhill. Good, sympathetic refurb and an excellent restaurant will hopefully revive its fortunes.

This is a big imposing pub, with a lovely landscaped garden out the back that I'd imagine being packed in the summer months. I think that the garden is probably the best feature, although they could probably invest in some new tables as I had to try a couple before I found one that was sturdy enough for my bulky frame and even that had a rusty nail sticking out of one of the seats. The member of staff that I informed seemed more relieved that I wasn't making a complaint, but hopefully he went out and hammered the nail back in.
The inside of the pub is very big, but it feels more like a restaurant and they certainly seemed to be more interested in flogging the Thai food than serving beer. The food must be good for this place to have an a la carte restaurant area upstairs as it seemed that every shop on the parade outside was either a restaurant or a take-away making the competition fierce.
Bombardier and Deuchars were available alongside San Miguel and a range of standard draught. I opted for the Bombardier which was pleasant enough.
I didn't try the food so I cannot comment, but if I was just up for a drink I would walk past on a cloudy day.
