A traditional stone-built village pub that now has a good reputation for food. There is a pleasant paved garden at the rear with several booths for al fresco dining. There is a car park where customers are asked to park due to the barrow road through the village. Inside there are a lot of original architectural features on display including stone fireplaces at either end of the conjoined front bar and exposed timbers. There are a couple of other, smaller rooms behind which make for more intimate dining. Most of the tables were laid to table, leaving few spaces for drinkers, though there were barstools available. There was a small local contingent, not particularly friendly. The staff were also not that welcoming, and we waited quite a long time to be acknowledged, and that was without the slightest trace of a smile. Three pumps on the bar, two with reversed clips and one dispensing Plain Ales’s Sheep Dip. The beer was OK but not exciting, the food was expensive, and it didn’t feel very convivial, so while I’m happy to pop in when passing, I wouldn’t go out of my way to come here.
