E TA left this review about The Squire Inn
A former coaching inn dating from the 16th Century, it’s a basic high street boozer which does cheap food. Its provenance can be seen from the layout and some original features such as the frontage and side entrance, and the low timbered ceiling in the centre of the downstairs rooms, though much of the remaining interior has been opened out and modernised. The flooring is flagstone, though it is unlikely that this is original. The two front rooms have been conjoined, while the original back room is open plan apart from the chimney breast, which houses a woodburner which doesn’t quite heat the rooms as well as it should. The back room has been extended into the former courtyard, and this is now run as a separate restaurant business called the Sodbury Steakhouse, though it’s still open plan with the pub itself. The pub also offers sustenance in the shape of burgers and other junk food. The bar counter is off to one side in the central area, and a small paved yard remains at the back for smoking and al fresco drinking. There was a large TV screen in the middle showing live sports, though this was muted in favour of dull pop music on the HiFi. Only one ale on, Landlord, in good condition. A second pump was clipped Tribute, but this had run out, while a third dispensed Stan’s Cider. The keg options were Korev, Poretti, Thatcher’s Gold and Haze, Guinness, Stella, San Miguel and Brooklyn. It was by no means the friendliest of pubs. The surly barman seemed a bit put out by our asking for beer, while the other customers were mainly shoppers and people with nothing better to do. Assuming that a thriving Cotswold small town has better options, we’ll try somewhere else next time.
