A quick revisit prior to The Big Family Festive Meal at the sister pub down the road. Much better this time, though that was partly down to the young barman who conscientiously poured through all the ales when I ordered a couple 30 mins after opening (his female companion had already served at least one prior…). Four on with a pair of proper small brewery beers in Beermats Diplomat Stout and Handy Andy Bloke Down The Pub. The two we had were fairly good, NBSS 3 and 3.5. Question now is whether this is a classic ‘cask good when weather not warm’ place. I’ll try again in summer. 6.5

More a local than its sister pub (White Horse) down the road. Not much to write home about inside, though tidy enough. There was a fridge of pub snacks (scotch eggs, sausage rolls) which looked good and there were a few people in as well so a decent atmosphere. Three cask on with a decent selection in Pedi, Charnwood Vixen and Brunswick Usual, the latter of which was on the cusp of turning (NBSS 1.5) unfortunately. Decided that I couldn’t be arsed to quibble as I needed to head off shortly anyway. A shame about the duff pint, as they’ve set themselves up to be worth a visit. Maybe I’ll give them a second chance at some point. Rated 5.5
