There don’t appear to have been any significant changes here since my last visit more than four years ago. As noted previously, it’s one of the more modern pubs in town and geared towards to more youthful end of the market. A pint of Caledonia Best cost me £3.10 and Tennent’s lager, Stella Artois, Budweiser, St. Mungo lager, Guinness and Magner’s cider are also on draught.

Modern décor, loud music and flashing lights are the order of the day, at least at night, here. Clearly aiming for the youth market, it is an unusual departure for this historic town where most pubs go for a more “traditional” ambience. There are half a dozen flat screen TVs ranged around the walls, showing, mainly, pop videos and “all big sporting events live.” Located up an alleyway off the High Street and with no near neighbours to disturb, it is licensed until 1.00a.m. every night. There is a sedate restaurant upstairs, also called The Woodpecker, which is a complete contrast to the discofied bar below.
