Trendy student bar that felt like a junk food joint this afternoon with most customers eating veritable mountains of nachos. the jukebox in the corner and sole old fella reading the paper are the only real nods to a pub atmosphere. But I didn’t mind this place. three real ales from Stewart (Road Reverse), Tiny Rebel (Dutty) and Titanic (Plum Porter) helped.

An uneven U shaped bar with a niceish horseshoe counter. The outer signage suggested there might be a problem but as it's a GBG listed pub I persevered. Inside I found three pumps, two of disappointment and one of expectation - it was OK not special, but OK. Apart from the niceish counter, there's bench seating at wooden tables , some old pictures on the walls and some old and new posters, a bit like a dark, student canteen. It's nice enough and worth dropping in for one if in the area, I wouldn't make a special trip but it could be combined with the excellent Cask & Barrel and maybe the wonderful Dagda Bar too.

The Auld Hoose is a basic, slightly scruffy establishment serving food and real ale to a varied mix of students, real ale lovers and a few strange individuals. The staff are also strange, but that only adds to the character. Three handpumps on this time, one less than my last visit a year ago. The ale is excellent, kept at the right temperature and in perfect condition - a pint of Hobgoblin, which seems to be a regular ale here, was very much appreciated. Despite the high quality of the beers, though, I can never really relax and enjoy myself here, but I would recommend anyone passing to give it a try.

Deserves it's GBG listing for the beers alone, four handpumps with one cider, one guest and Deuchars (of course) and Hobgoblin as regulars. The darkness of the latter possibly reflects the pubs target market. It's very much a down to earth music pub aimed at students. I could have done without the loud rock music playing on a quiet afternoon but service was good and friendly. I'd go back again if I was in the area but probably wouldn't make a special trip.
