E TA left this review about The Halfway House

A slightly run-down roadside pub, family-owned, surprisingly quiet given its proximity to J27 of the M5. There is plenty of parking at the front and one side, and there is a large, albeit quite scruffy, garden at the back which has children’s play apparatus and suffers from a lot of road noise. There is also seating at the front for smokers. Two rooms at the front, the larger of which is a restaurant area, the smaller a public bar. Both are served from a central servery. The public bar has a jukebox, gaming machine, TV screen and a woodburner in a brick fireplace. There are a couple of tables and some barstools, so it does feel more like a proper pub than a tourist diner. The barman seemed a bit hostile at first, though he was more convivial with a couple of locals who came in after us. The restaurant was reasonably priced would be an ideal venue for a Darby and Joan outing. Ales on were Otter Bitter and Wadworth 6X, one handpump on each side of the bar so you couldn’t see both clips at the same time. Also on were Aspall’s Cider, Guinness, Carling and Amstel. Convenient and cheap though it is, I couldn’t warm to the place so would in future go a little further off the motorway to find a more desirable pitstop.
