An excellent village pub on the edge of Exmoor. The original inn, some of which dates back to the twelfth Century, was much larger than the present business, and it now houses the village shop and post office, though it still does B&B. There is parking just a few yards away on the main road through the village, There is a comfortable drawing room on the left as you enter, which has armchairs, a sofa and a fireplace. The main bar is on the right has a tiled floor, and there is a further room beyond the stone fireplace, which contains a woodburner, at the end of the bar, mainly for diners. The young barman was very helpful, friendly and knowledgable, and both we and our dogs were very comfortable here. Although previously a residents only hotel, it now operates as a proper pub, and one of the best in the Exmoor area. Food is locally sourced, freshly cooked and very good value for money, excellent pub grub by any standard. Ales on were Exmoor Ale and Gold, plus Caledonian Deuchres. all in excellent condition. Also available were Thatcher’s Haze, Estrella, Guinness, Carlsberg and Moretti. Definitely worth a visit, and I’d be happy to stay here while visiting the area.
