A fairly unspoilt dales pub of the superior sort but not intimidatingly posh. A multi room layout with the small main bar to the right off the front entrance corridor. To the left is a restaurant and further back a similar sized snug and a corridor with access to the large rear car park and a public bar known as the “Diesel and Dust Room” with a pool table, screen and machine. Both bars have three pulls with local beers from Black Sheep, Theakstons and Wensleydale. A standard collection of keg brands tops and tails the pulls. The decor is traditional and worth looking at with maps, old prints, stuffed fish, old advertisements and brass stuff. Furnishings are equally traditional with settles and cast iron based wooden topped tables. A great place to stop off as it sits on the junction of the northern and southern main roads through the dale. The beer was just average unfortunately but probably the first out that lunchtime, the second and third pints improved and the portions of hearty food were generous.

Well, I will never forget the fire :-)

8 Miles into day 2 of the inn way and we hit this place at 1pm.

Wet clothes off in the hallway and a nice chat with the chef/barmaid. Made to feel welcome.

Black sheep was fine. Other pint was Theaskstons. Couple of decent sandwiches.

Feel the previous reviews are a touch harsh. Surely the fact its from 1465 and contains the horn of Wensleydale makes it worth checking out.

I’m afraid to say that this is yet another of those pubs, too common in every region, that is trading on a reputation of what-forty or fifty years ago. It’s a lovely firm, solid building in a commanding position in an attractive , historic village in one of the most beautiful corners of God’s own county, yet it is unloved and sad. The public bar is stark, the other rooms dark; the lovely wooden panelling unsympathetically lit.
The choice of beer was pedestrian: my pint of Theakston’s Best was only marginally drinkable, Black Sheep B est was better, and I didn’t try the Websters-I thought that had gone with the Ark. Needless to say the food was pretty grim. The staff were cheerful in a rather medieval way, but the grumpy landlord-we remembered him from previous, if not so depressing visits, was lurking on the sidelines.
I can’t comment on the hotel side of the business, but what is needed is someone with flair and imagination to rescue this place.
