The Grapes is a Shepherd Neame pub with outside seating in an area to the left of the pub that is slightly set back and chained off from the passing street. Apparently there is room for forty, but it would be a bit of a squeeze. The interior is quite small with a bar at the front and a raised seating area at the rear. The jukebox was playing some background music and the solitary plasma screen above the entrance was airing muted Deal or no Deal. This is a very clean pub and the toilets were spotless with a few historic moments captured on the front page of newspapers framed on the walls.
The bar is stocked with the usual SN range of draught and the two hand pumps were drawing Spitfire and Master Brew. I found the governor to be extremely friendly, but there was no atmosphere as the only other customer was putting all of his money into the fruit machine. The other pubs in the area were reasonably busy for a Friday afternoon so I am unsure why this place was empty as I found it to be quite comfortable.
