Bucking Fastard left this review about The Maypole
An old building at the top of the hill in the quiet hamlet of Acton Bridge,we arrived seeking food .The door to the right opens into a small public bar with two unclipped hand pumps but a side door here gives access to the lounge which is all together more appealing. The low ceiling is decorated with horse brasses, there is a decent sized fireplace with a wood burner and a few nooks and crannies. Most of the tables are set for dining, but you could easily settle for a quiet pint which on my trip was a choice between Tetley's Bitter and CW Bombardier,so we concentrated on the food.
It's all home made, and the deserts were displayed in a glass cabinet in the lounge.A mature husband and wife team run the pub,and their style along with the food is very traditional.Mains were generally meat and two veg, with a choice of potatoes at very reasonable prices. The pub is also popular with senior citizens and the atmosphere was very reminiscent of country dining pubs of the 60's and 70's,old fashioned yet in a good way.
I wasn't excited by the choice of real ale but food was available until 9.30pm on a Saturday evening, which was a much better showing than the two chain pubs down the hill by the river.
