A below review calls it ‘uninspiring’ and I would be inclined to agree. Zombie like service and weirdly unfriendly, the interior is a bit of a weird mix of styles in the various seating areas. Wide ranging pub food menus on all tables. National ales plus a decent local Kirkstone Gold. I wouldn’t be terribly keen to return but wouldn’t rule it out, Penrith isn’t brimming with quality alternatives during the day.

I visited back in October 2017 and my experience was very similar to that of Will Larter in the previous review. At the time there were three pumps at the bar, offering London Pride, Dizzy Blonde and Wadworth 6X. Nothing to get excited about but it was nice to try the pub. There was a chalk board listing the available ales and what is coming up next. The pub does food but seems quite casual.

I was tempted back here having read in a local Camra magazine that real ale was available again. There are three hand pumps and generous tasters were offered, though to be honest the beers were all very similar (see photo), being seasonal offerings from mainstream breweries. I had the Shepherd Neame Rudolf's Reward in preference to Wychwood or Caledonian. It's a shame to see no representation from local breweries, and I suspect that there may be some sort of arrangement to take beers off a specified list in return for financing the refurbishment of the pub.
It's a large pub, based on two or possibly three original buildings, as evidenced by not only external appearances but also changes of level inside and the way that walls have been replaced by large beams and pillars. I've always liked the look of this pub, and I'm glad they're offering real ales; perhaps I'll give it a try again next time I'm in Penrith.

Gutted by fire a few years back, so new interior. Usually 2 real ales on. OK but uninspiring.

It looks nice outside and isn't too bad. Real ales available.

Called in here just to see if anything had changed since the last review. The solitary hand pump on the bar appeared to have a beer called Howell's Frosty Bells on. However, the person in front of me in the queue (yes, it really was a queue - just one person serving on a busy Christmas Eve) asked for it and was told it was off, so I didn't hang around.

Nice looking exterior, shame about the interior. No real ale on when I've been in although I'm pretty sure there was a handpump. Not much to say really, it's a pretty unexceptional place with not much to recommend it.
