Excellent pub and easily the best I found in Penrith, though I wasn’t able to visit the Fell Bar this time. Marstons must have dispensed of this place, their beers were nowhere to be seen - four ales on including a superb Titanic Cappuccino stout. Service in the dining area was good, besides a comedy moment when I was brought a cup of coffee rather than my chosen beer :). I would happily visit again either for a meal or drink in the lively bar.

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about Agricultural Hotel

Modernised pub near the railway station and castle which thankfully retains some character in and around the central bar with its splendid 'shutter and panel' servery. Also has a slightly raised dining area (in darkness when I visited) to the left of the entrance and a number of benches out front (including those behind a screen which provides some shelter). Four real ales on handpump: Windermere Collie Wobbles, Allendale Pennine Pale, Cracker from Barngates (£3.75) and Hawkshead Prime Porter.

Close to the train station, and a Morrisons, but easily walkable from the town centre without too much effort.

Four hand pulls offering, at the time of my visit a week or so back, Titanic Plum Porter, Oakham Green Devil, Kirkby Lonsdale Stanley's, and Barngates Tag Lag. The Tag Lag was £1.90 for a half and a decent bitter.

The outdoor seating seemed to be more popular than indoors, despite the weather not being glorious sunshine.

There is a fairly small but grand looking bar with rising service hatches. Food is served and it is also a hotel. Not much atmosphere indoors during the day as it was so quiet but music was playing at a reasonable background volume so it wasn't like sitting in a dentist's waiting room (if you can remember when we were last allowed to do that). Banquette seating, low level stools and dining style chairs make up the indoor seating, with varnished wooden square dining style tables.

A nice tidy place, presumably of some history, and one I would be happy to return to.

Perfectly positioned for when you have an hour to wait for your train.

Four real ales on and after a sample of a couple, I settled for a Wagtail from the Allendale Brewery. In absolutely pefect condition.

Traditional interior with a dining room, and bar area. Outside tables for the summer.

Successful visit.

My old Cumbria beer guide shows this as a Marston's rather than Jenning's pub. It's the bar and eating area of an old Hotel so there is something of an emphasis on food. It's a split level open plan room with the dining area up a few steps to the left as you enter. The lower area has a bench along the wall, some square tables and the servery at the rear.
There are six hand pumps that had Jenning's Cumberland, Crag Rat & Sneck Lifter, Brakspear's Bitter, Banks's Sunbeam and Hobgoblin Gold. I went for the Cumberland (£3.00) which was first class. I thought I wasn't going to like this one but it turned out to be a lot better than expected.

Probably the nicest pub in Penrith and the better of the two by the station. Real ales available.

Will Larter left this review about Agricultural Hotel

I always call in here if I've time before a train from Penrith station, which is just across the road. Jennings Sneck Lifter is usually the beer of choice (the ordinary Bitter and Cumberland Ale were also on), but I thought I'd drink outside the box for a change. However, the Wrangham's Christmas Cracker 3.8% dispensed from the fourth hand pump was distinctly odd when I had a 'taster', and the bar staff either didn't believe the report of my tastebuds or didn't care. Perhaps this is the something odd that Rob Camra refers to in his review: the place seems to be run by hotel waitresses with no interest in the pub side of things.

The atmosphere always seems friendly, but maybe that's because I'm usually here in the run up to Christmas. The bar is a very smart affair of beech and glass, but maybe this also has the effect of putting distance between the staff and customers, adversely affecting the relationship which is one of the basic requirements of a pub. Anyway, the Sneck Lifter was spot on as always, so I'll definitely be coming back.

Decent enough pub with the full Jennings range on tap. Always a good pint whenever I've called in. For some reason this pub just doesn't feel right to me. I can't quite put my finger on it but there's something. I'll keep calling in for the beer until I work out what it is !!
