This is a stand-alone pub on a forgotten bit of the main road which has been straightened out at some time, leaving the building a bit marooned. The two room format has been retained with a vault (public bar) on the right as you enter plus a larger main lounge which has been extended to the rear and side with large windows overlooking the sizeable garden. A terrace at the end of the garden overlooks the Trent and Mersey canal below plus the Anderton Boat Lift which is still in use lifting vessels from the canal to the River Weaver adjacent.
The vault has a dartboard, TV and a games machine while the beamed lounge is partially carpeted and has various framed photos of the canal and boat lift plus some old maps on display. There is an exposed brick fire place which looks to get some use, logs are stacked next to it. Only one of the three handpumps was clipped, offering Castle Rock Harvest Pale. They still do food but I wouldn't say that this is a destination dining venue.
There were a few in on a weekday lunchtime which can only be a good thing. Bearing in mind the proximity to the canal and the boat lift visitor centre however, the pub could perhaps try a bit harder.

Busy food orientated pub although drinkers are catered for without feeling like you are in a restaurant. Overlooking the Anderton Boat Lift and the Trent & Mersey Canal. Uninspiring choice of real ale John Smiths, Adnams Best & Speckled Hen. Didn't try the Smiths but the other 2 were o.k. and in good condition. The food in this pub more than makes up for the ale selection though. Worth calling in again just for the food.
