Will Larter left this review about Crompton Tavern
This is a nice, slightly scruffy, back-street local on a residential street surprisingly close to the town centre. Bookshelves and artworks adorn the walls, and a bundle of Sunday papers were occupying a corner of the bar, but I declined the offer of one as I was still on Saturday's Guardian. I was the first person through the door, not long after midday, and remained the only customer for the duration of my stay. The pub has a well-used look to it, though, so I reckon I just caught a quiet time.
There are five hand pumps on the bar, one unused, with two ales from the Marstons stable, plus Timothy Taylor Landlord and Kelham Island Rye Plains Drifter. I had Pedigree, which was in good condition. There was no music when I was here, though a TV set was tuned to a terrestrial channel, showing an old episode of Morse. If I lived in this part of town I reckon I would have no trouble making this my regular calling point.
