Roadside country pub and GBG regular. Tidy and tasteful décor inside - green wall panelling, some dried hops above bar, jugs on high shelves, old rugby match shields on the walls. Outside there is a small beer patio with a bit of flora but look harder (and walk further) and you’ll come across a couple of elevated grass sections with traditional pub benches affording a rather nice view across the Bourne valley. It’s a foody establishment with plenty of people chowing down on our early evening visit. Five ales; Hop Back Summer Lighting, Red Cat Best, Exmoor Gold, Yeovil Summerset (good) and Flowerpots Gold. Perhaps a bit over-slanted on the golden side but a decent selection nonetheless. Landlord is referred to elsewhere as a bit of a grumpy character and my mate who was buying the round mentioned this without prompting (though I wasn’t paying attention). Either way I enjoyed my brief stop-off here and would have no problem returning.

A reasonably large detached white rendered roadside country pub, with patio/beer garden and in the GBG 2010.
The interior is open plan around a central bar. The decor is green wood panel with white upper and ceiling, with a brick fireplace where there was a nice fire. Lots of pictures decorated the walls, with hose racing being a popular theme - other ephemera included jugs, bottles and a beer mat collection behind the bar. The food was really nice and decent value. The service was fine and the clientele seemed mainly local and again, friendly.
Beer; tap stuff and an excellent wine collection. On handpull were; Cheriton's Flowerpots Bitter and Goodens Gold, both very nice, Hopback Summer Lightning, Butcombe Bitter and a really nice Box Steam's Tunnel Vision.
Another must really - a superb place, go to this and the Malet, but get the other half to drive!

One of the best pubs in Wiltshire, the Earl is stil a freehouse which serves a range of beers, always in the best condition. Alan, the landlord, can be a bit grumpy but that is part of the pub's charm. His wife, Nicky, produces excellent food, both traditional bar meals and a few original dishes. When I last visited there were 4 ales on - I tried both the Summer Lightning and fff, and both were superb. A proper traditional pub which is well worth a visit anytime.
