A really nice traditional roadside hotel, though to be honest the A683 between Sedbergh and Kirkby Stephen is not much of a road, and this pub deserves better. It doesn't feature on Camra's inventory of heritage interiors, so I can only assume that all the old features that are apparent must have been mucked about with just that little bit too much. The bar counter looks old, the furniture is mostly settles and old arm chairs, and there's a fireplace with a kitchen range, though that could easily have been installed from elsewhere I suppose. Never mind, as it's still very pleasant, and at times interesting and amusing to look around at all the artefacts - mostly relating to motor cars and racing - that have been accumulated here. Less amusing perhaps was the isolated hand pump on the bar with a strawberry beer from Pennine brewery. Luckily it was pretty early in the morning and I asked for a coffee, but if it had been beer o'clock I would definitely not have been amused. I rather liked it here, but I had made a special detour on my cycling route to get here, and it doesn't look like being the sort of place I'd be coming back to. (Minimum spend on card: £10, otherwise cash.)
