Blue Scrumpy left this review about The Golden Lion

With time ticking on, I had time for just one more new pub in Keswick and I chose the Golden Lion on what is probably Keswick's main shopping street. Being quite late in the evening and walking into an almost empty pub, I was concerned that they may have already called last orders. But bar staff were still glad to serve me and a few stragglers came in after me. Nevertheless, I was surprised at how quiet the place was considering its central location.

The pub has some windows that open up onto Main Street, presumably making it a good spot for people watching during the daytime. There was a big screen TV at the front and a smaller TV to the rear. I recall seeing some flowery wallpaper!

On the bar, Theakston Old Peculier is a regular. Guest beers were Allendale Golden Plover & Hop On, Bowness Bay Swift Best & Kirkby Lonsdale Monumental. Ciders were the 3 fruity ones from Thatcher's. The price for a pint of cask ale was £6, which made it the most expensive pub in Keswick on this visit and may go some way to explaining why it was so quiet.

I guess that its location gets it a fair amount of customers by default during the day and this custom may be sufficient for it to maintain 5 real ales. However at night, it's worth seeking out somewhere a bit cheaper and with a bit more atmosphere.

Will Larter left this review about The Golden Lion

I almost turned around at the door because of the blast of high volume Christmas music that assailed my ears on entering, but I persevered and found a space among the drinkers at the bar. The barman was on a mobile phone call, and turned his back on the customers to make it clear how important and private this call was. After about two minutes he straightened up and walked to the other end of the bar, continuing to both ignore me and to speak into his phone. After another minute I walked out. I can't imagine I'll be trying again.
