The grey paint screams "gastro-pub" at you even before you cross the threshold and find the barman addressing you as "sir". It's very smart inside, with nice furniture everywhere, but every table you see is giving you that gentle nudge that says they would rather you order something to eat than just a half of bitter before you slope off into a corner to write a review for a well-known pubs website.

Pride of place is given to recent awards from Cumbria Life magazine - Dining Pub and Young Chef of 2013, and everywhere you look suggests quality. The beer choice is good, with three local breweries represented: Consiston Old Man, Barngates Cracker and Winster Old School. I had the latter, which was not up to much, I'm afraid; the barman had several extra opportunities to "sir" me as he struggled to get the over-frothy beer into the glass, and after all that it was nothing like as good as the same beer in its home at the Brown Horse just up the valley. I didn't hear anyone complaining about the food, though, so if that's your thing, off you go.
