Set up from the main road, this is a three roomed place with a basic rough-hewn interior (rough walls, flagstone floor, rustic furniture, settles) with a lovely embossed glass window in the middle section. Probably quite atmospheric in the winter when not in the fag-end of a pandemic. Sat outside, which was pleasant enough with a view of Ogmore Castle if you were lucky. The name itself is worth Googling – “The Pelican Christian symbol represents atonement and charity. 'Pelican in her piety' in heraldry and symbolical art, is a representation of a pelican in the act of wounding her breast in order to nourish her young with her blood a practice fabulously attributed to the bird.” A shame then, that the pub sign made no attempt to depict this and was far more gastro in styling. Plenty of pumps at the bar but just Butty available which was a little long in the tooth but drinkable enough (NBSS 2.5).
