The Star Inn’s list of credentials when measured in CAMRA awards is pretty impressive as it has been Brecknock Pub of the Year for six consecutive years (2009-14) and was awarded South Wales CAMRA Pub of the Year in 2013.
These accolades have been awarded due to the fact that The Star has a frequently changing ale policy from brewers all over GB and they are reliably kept in excellent condition. They now always have an ale from Brecon Brewing available and actually for our visit there was a bit of a focus on local Welsh ales because alongside the non-Welsh Dark Star Pale Ale there was Grey trees Caradog’s and Three Beacons plus Jazzy Beacons from Brecon Brewing (in honour of the fact that The Star Inn was also a venue for the Brecon Fringe festival despite its out of town location).
When added to the fact that this is a great traditional pub that also does very good pub food (being a member of the Grown in Wales campaign), I can concur with others that this is not one to miss when in the area.

GBG 2014 listed pub. Whitewashed exterior with an eye-catching stained glass pub sign. The interior is three rooms off a central island bar, traditionally furnished and rather characterful in an olde worlde way (proper fires throughout and a set of stocks in one of the rooms too!). Five ales (Wye Valley Choc n’ Oat Stout, Otley O4, Cheddar Bitter Bully, Brecon Snowy Beacons and Bombardier). I tried them all bar the Bombardier and they were in good-to-excellent nick, served up by a friendly barmaid, who became the dewy-eyed object of affection from one of my fellow crawlees (lucky for her it was his first stop). Penderyn Welsh whisky was also available as well as a Fiery Fox cider. Loads of old pump clips adorn the walls attesting to the throughput of guest ales. Music of choice was a strangely eclectic selection including Ernie the Fastest Milkman in the West, apparently the landlords choice to annoy the kitchen staff - we rather enjoyed it which seemed to please him immensely. The rear garden (which overlooks Monmouthshire & Brecon canal) was closed due to the excessive rain but the little footbridge afforded a nice view. Of the 21 pubs we packed in on our weekend jaunt round the region, this was voted best by all four of us. Do this one.

Popped into the Star for a pint after taking in Pen-Y-fan. As the reviews say below, this is an excellent real ale pub with 4 brews on the bar. We were ther at Sunday lunch time and the place was packed with locals and walkers alike, demolishing huge plates of food. Judging by the 100's of clips on the cieling, this place is not afraid to ship in beers from all over the country, but if you really must, there is lager and John Smiths?
A local pub that seems to be thriving, despite being well off the beaten track. Well worth the visit.

The Star has been the best real ale pub in this region since the mid 1980s....that says it all!

A great pub, serving quality food, with an extensive and varied range of real ales. A good atmosphere too.
