A friendly local with a convivial atmosphere, this pub consists of a main bar at the front, formed from two conjoined rooms, and a small games room down some steps at the rear, which currently hosts a pool table. BS, below, has mentioned the patio which is still there. The locals were friendly enough, including a small dachshund, while the bar staff were helpful and engaging. Only one ale on cask, Butcombe Original, which was in good condition. There was also a dry pump, and there were 2 boxed ciders from Nixon’s, a local cider mill. On keg were Amstel, Poretti, Thatcher’s Gold and Guinness. Worth a visit if passing, but parking can be problematic.

Watch out for the opening times at this village local. They are closed on a Monday and a Tuesday and don't open until 5pm for the rest of the week, apart from a Sunday lunchtime session.

The pub doesn't have a car park, but street parking is available. We received a warm welcome from both staff and customers here. In the main bar area, a pool table at one end seems to occupy everybody's attention. A rear room can be used for diners or for overspill drinkers. Music was playing in the background, but wasn't too obtrusive. There was no sign of a TV, meaning I was happy not to be subjected to the FA Cup Final. There is also a small patio at the rear, that didn't look too inviting.

Butcombe Original is the real ale. They also had Thatcher's Stan's Cheddar Valley cider. Food seems to revolve around pizzas. Freshly made, they were reasonably good value and very tasty. With one of the locals celebrating their birthday, we also each received a slice of birthday cake.

A basic, but very friendly village local that hit the spot.
