A traditional working village pub in a Victorian stone house. There is a large walled car park at the front, a comfortable garden and some outside seating on a paved terrace by the front door. When we visited there was a large marquee at the entrance, intended for smokers, but the smoke was blowing into the pub. A Royal Artillery flag was flying on a flagpole at the front of the pub, but no-one seemed to know why. Inside, the downstairs room have been converted into a single long bar with flagstone flooring, a stone fireplace with woodburner at one end, and a smaller hearth with an oak lintel in the middle of one wall. A large TV Screen was showing live football. There is a separate games room with a pool table, while a couple of sorts trophies were on display in the bar. We were welcomed by the locals, a decent bunch, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Dogs were catered for. No hot food was available, but they did still serve filled rolls as mentioned by Jonathan in the Pub Facilities list, though hopefully not the same ones he saw. They occasionally host live acts, and there are weekly bike nights in the Summer months. One ale on draft when we visited, Gulp IPA from Frome, plus Stan’s Cider on draft. On keg were Carling, 1664, Estrella, Thatcher’s Gold, Stan’s Keg and Guinness. A really decent pub, well worth the effort to find.
