Now been tarted-up a bit but in quite a tasteful way – white, red and mustard colour scheme and wood floor. Large Hammond organ, dunno if it actually works or gets played. Chasing Michelin stars these days and the pub element is apparently only for quiet gentlefolk, our group who came in and brought what I would call a traditional pub atmosphere were actually told off for being too noisy! Three West Berks beers on; Chubbs, GOB and Mild, the latter of which had a slight tart edge.

Out-of-the-way pub. Traditional post-war interior, carpeted and a log fire on the go (apparently this was built in the 1950’s to replace the previous building which burnt down). Three ales, West Berks GOB, Cottage Trafalgar and Andwell. My GOB was OK if a bit cold and served in a dirty glass, tut. A smattering of old boys watching the horse racing. Big beer garden with kids play area, probably a sun-trap on a summer’s day. Didn’t feel entirely at ease here, without quite being able to put my finger on why. A shame as there seems to be a bit going for it. Maybe it gets a bit livelier in the evening when the Watermill theatre is open. Rated 6
