A very pleasant country pub as described by Old Blue, below. Still owned by Palmer’s, and there is no guest ale, just Palmer’s Gold and IPA on draft, plus the full Palmer’s range of bottled ales. The car par leads to an outside terrace with spectacular views across the local hills. The staff were very welcoming indeed, making us feel instantly welcomed and included in the general banter. The professional barmaid was, in particular, good value and a great source of local information, or, if you prefer, gossip. Opening hours are unpredictable so it’s pot luck as to whether you find it open, but if you happen to be out this way it’s well worth a visit.

This late Victorian stone pub in a picturesque working village is affectionately known as ‘The Shoes’ locally. The main bar area is a room to the right as you enter, with the room on the left being set for diners. The terrace at the rear offers a great view of the village and countryside. Our Saturday lunchtime visit found a warm welcome and good service.
The four ale pumps offered Palmers’ Copper Ale and Best (good pints of, at £2.95 and £3.10 respectively) with the other two empty. The best thing about this pub however is the food, the renowned menu offering a range of traditionally inspired but rather interesting dishes made from local produce - not cheap with mains starting at around £10, but extremely delicious and well worth it. Rooms are also available ‘from £65 in August’ and the AA plaque outside rates it as a four star inn.
I liked this pub a lot, and would certainly come here again.
