A roadside inn dating from the 17th Century, predominantly a food-led pub with accommodation. There is a car park behind the pub, adjacent to which are the chalet-style rooms around a paved garden area. Inside, there is a large front bar formed from conjoined rooms, with exposed timbers, timber floors and an impressive brick fireplace. There is a more formal dining room leading off this room. There is a variety of small tables and more comfy seating, and it has a very homely feel. The staff are cheery and helpful, the other clients were mostly elderly; very few locals were using the bar, probably because the prices are high. Beer is about 12% more expensive than other nearby pubs, food between 50 – 100% more. That said, the food was very good, a mixture of gastro and restaurant dishes. Ales on were Branscombe Branco and Otter Ale, both in good condition. There was also a selection of foreign lagers on hydrants on the bar. It was a very pleasant visit, and I like it here, but the prices would put me off dropping in on a regular basis or for a quickie when passing. Good for a special occasion or for B&B though.
