A lively pub which is in the current Good Beer Guide, but I found it disappointing. The interior has been stripped back to bare stone or brick, but in lots of places this amounts to no more than rubble, which any self-respecting builder would cover with render rather than exposing his botched work to the derision of all-comers. The subdued lighting and complicated layout suggested that a game of dungeons and dragons was about to start, and a few of the local lager drinkers who had started Christmas a day or two early were probably only a pint or two short of joining in.
On the bar were six hand pumps, with one cider, two with Jennings beers, two from Cumbrian Legendary Ales and one from Strands. This should have made for an interesting selection, but most were at the lagerish end of the spectrum, and even the Jennings Bitter is not as malty as it used to be. My half of CLA Langdale was a poor beer, and the Jennings Bitter was not very well kept either. I don't know which other Cockermouth pubs have made it into the GBG, but I have to say that on my admittedly limited sampling, this should not be among them.

Slightly peculiar pub, with the feel of a medieval club, if that's not a contradiction in terms. Rather dark interior, with various stonework, and a large room behind. Does have a couple of decent ales on however. Appears to have originally been the Ship Inn.
