The inn was built as a staging post for coach horses on the turnpike road between Sheffield and Manchester in the early 19th century. It's a large multi-roomed stone-built house, miles from anywhere in Ashopton Woods - the postal address of Bamford is a bit misleading as the village is a good eight miles away. On the bar are two hand pumps, serving Theakstons Best Bitter and Black Bull Bitter. The Best was a reasonably priced £2.70 a pint and was in good condition.

I didn't eat, but I noticed that the food was reasonably priced too, for a tourist area, with soup at £2.95 and main courses around the £8 mark. There is a very smart dining room to the right of the bar, another (overflow dining room?) to the rear, which was locked, and the room to the left of the bar has been knocked through to make a pub-type area at the front. There are a few benches outside and a substantial car park.

The walls are adorned with a number of pictures, plus photos of historical people and events connected with the pub, such as the Dambusters raid: members of the 617 Squadron stayed at the inn when doing practice runs over the nearby Derwent reservoirs. There are also bits of a history of the pub dotted about the walls, including excerpts from local newspapers regarding various hangings, murders, suicides and other deaths that have occurred along the A57 - don't say you weren't warned.
