As described by others, below, this traditional town pub is lively, welcoming and well worth the walk up from the City centre. Its location means it caters mainly for students and NHS staff, both groups of which are offered discount, but it’s equally accessible to everyone. They host quiz nights, and the garden is used as a bit of a party venue, though it falls short of being called a function room. The staff were helpful and the atmosphere was convivial. The drinks range was good – on draft were Forward Thinking Beer’s dawn Golden Ale, Bristol Beer Factory’s Milk Stout, Branch Farmboy Cider, and there were a couple of dry pumps. On keg were North Street Cider, Lost and Grounded Helles, Gravity Pils, Arbor Mosaic, Renaissance Hackney Church, On Point’s All Good, Quantock’s Radicle, plus Left handed Giant’s Run Free and Deeper Water. There was also a good wine list, better than that in many of the local restaurants. We made good use of the discount that was offered, and I’m pretty sure I’ll include this one in a future crawl.

I really liked this pub, ok the large glass door entrance is still here, which I was concerned about as I thought I was entering a Wine bar style establishment. We sat at the bar and chose a beer from their choice of six handpumps, there was also a cider on hand pump. The two locals sat along side us at the bar were friendly and chatty. They both advised us to try the Moor Brewery So' Hop, which was excellent. The beer was quite lively through the pump, so the young barman took a couple of jugs down to the cellar to bring up the beer. I don't know whether the pub has recently changed hands, as the barman was explaining to us that the pub has only just got it's license to open all week, within the last three weeks. Another beer tried was Yeovil Ales Glory.

Situated halfway up the calf-burning St Michael’s Hill, this place was revamped thoroughly in 2010 and has gone upmarket; a glass entrance door leads to the bar area with IKEA-style panelling, laminates and colours inside. Tidy, if rather characterless. The upstairs dining room is a little more grand, with a nice fireplace. There’s a tiny decked patio to rear and top-notch traps. Was excited to see an excellent ale selection (2 Celt Experience, 2 Moor, a Cotswold and a Cheddar). However…the Celt Golden tasted fine but was very cloudy (cost £1.80 for a half) and it was a similar story with the Celt Bleddyn (£1.85), someone has either not let the barrels settle or given them a hefty wallop in the cellar as I know for a fact that these are clear ales; in fact I had a Golden a couple of days later in the Nags Head, Reading and it was clear as day. Both halves were served in very dirty/sticky glasses which was pretty poor standards for any pub, let alone one with upmarket pretensions. Clientèle-wise the intellectual conversation at bar contrasted with the tattooed family sat at the front, an interesting mix. Plenty of old clips snaking along the wall beams attest to its status as a freehouse but if my visit was an indicator they need to get a grip on the basics pronto. I’d have second thoughts about going back despite the enticing ale selection. I’ll be generous and give it a 6 as the ale was at least in decent condition, taste-wise.

This has recently been refurbished and now has a bit of a gastro-pub feel to it, although that’s just from the decor – it’s not a food dominated pub by any means and in fact I only spotted one portion of food coming out, which was a rather appetising looking pie and mash.
The pub itself is divided in to two bars, one at the front and one at the back. The bar counter runs between the two. The floors are reclaimed boards which seem to be rather in vogue at the moment and the walls are all a plain olive green with minimal decorations. Some trendy looking hanging lamps dominate the bar area. A plasma was on in both bars showing the football and the pub was fairly packed with people watching, which spoilt the ambience somewhat if you were just out for a quiet pint. The only place to avoid the sport was squeezing on to one of the bar stools.
Beers on tap were Yeovil’s Posh IPA, Brewdog’s Rip Tide and Moor Revival. There were a couple of pumps out of use, but the chalked up list of guests next to the bar suggested that these were Moles’ Rucking Mole and Cotleigh’s Old Hooker. There were also a couple of keg Brew Dogs, Punk IPA and 5AM Saint. Ciders were Thatcher’s Gold and Heritage, plus Aspall’s Suffolk.
