A good sized village pub, the last one remaining in this sizeable working village. Most of the garden has been given over to car parking, an indication that the majority of customers now travel here for their superb pub food. There remain a few benches and tables at the front, though the view is of the car park rather than the nearby river. At the back is a small covered paved yard with seating but no view. Inside, there are two main bar areas, semi-conjoined but separated by a structural chimney. On the right as you look at it from the car park is a dining room with a conservatory extension, not elegant but it does the job. The main bar is on the left, formed from two earlier rooms as indicated by there being two open fires; the smaller one was lit when we visited and that gave sufficient heat. The landlord and -lady were welcoming and friendly, happy to chat. Three ales on - Saltcombe Life Saver, in excellent condition, plus Exmoor Gold and Falls Over from Exeter Brewery which we didn't have time to sample. There was a box of Sam's Cider behind the bar, next to a large jar of dog biscuits. The keg choices were Brewdog Wingman, Guinness, Poretti, Orchard Pig, Korev, San Miguel, Carlsberg, Old Mout and Thatcher's Gold and Haze. Well worth seeking out if you have time, and we'll make a point of eating here and trying the other beers next time we're in the area.

Reopened after a significant refurbishment. Very dog friendly with 3 living in the pub itself.
