A great family owned country pub which is very much part of village life. There is a decent garden at the side and a field at the back where those so inclined can park their caravans. The inside has been knocked through to form a single large, comfortable bar with plenty of seating and tables for diners. It has retained a rural character, and the woodburner gives it a cosy atmosphere. The landlady was incredibly welcoming, and the other staff – family members, it would appear – helpful and engaging. The locals were also pleasant and made sure our dogs were entertained. There is a dartboard, though it wasn’t being used, and a TV in the corner which wasn’t switched on. Food was home cooked standard pub grub, plus a couple of specials and Sunday lunches, all at reasonable prices. It’s a Palmer’s pub, so all the ales were theirs – Copper, Dorset Gold and IPA were on and in good condition. Orchard Gold cider was also available and there were 2 ordinary lagers. I really enjoyed coming here and would do so again happily. It’s off the beaten track but still close enough to the A35 to be a worthwhile pitstop.
