Rob Hunter left this review about The New Clarence

Visited on a Tuesday afternoon in June. A short walk out from the centre but well worth seeking out. Seven hand pulls at the bar, all clipped at the time of my visit. Looked as if TT Boltmaker may be a regular with the others all guests - representing breweries such as Titanic, Pentrich and others lesser known. My half of TAR, a 7% porter by Gan Yam, set me back £2.50 and was superb. In addition to the ales, eight real ciders and perries were listed on a chalk board.

There are bench type booths, dark wood, feeling traditional but looked after. As has already been mentioned, an example of a pub being saved by its community. Toilets modern, a good size, and pleasant.

I'd definitely be happy to return when next in Hull.

Old Boots left this review about The New Clarence

Hull’s first and perhaps only community owned pub, it’s a big square room inside. There’s a U shaped counter with seven pumps on the front face serving a good mix of Yorkshire beers from Taylors, Bini, Atom, Wensleydale, Half Moon and an interloper from Welbeck Abbey. A couple of T-bars and solos for the keggery and about eight real ciders which I take to be BIB. Nice button back banquettes and some booths. A few old features are still extant mainly tongue & groove and architrave. A big blown up map of Kingston upon Hull from the 17th or 18th century covers one wall. There’s a small more secluded area off to the right. A comfy pub making a good two hander with the Hop & Vine round the corner.

ROB Camra left this review about The New Clarence

This community owned pub is now settling in and is going strong. We called in on a Thursday, early afternoon and it was doing a steady trade. 5 handpumps on the go and both the pints I had were in excellent nick. Ms CAMRA tried two different ones and was equally impressed. They're still after funding to reopen the upstairs into a function room, so donations are welcome. There's weekly quiz on Wednesday and a poker night. Friendly staff and locals are a bonus. All the best guys and good luck.

After a rather chequered history in recent years, the New Clarence was recently taken on by the team behind the excellent Whalebone. Up to eight real ales are reportedly now available . Sounds very promising.
