I called in because the Camra website shows John Smiths Cask being sold here. I found two hand pumps, a very friendly welcome, and a reversed pump clip with a beer from Chin Chin that had sold out over the weekend. The licensee says he has one cask each week, and when it's gone it's gone. It was the rhubarb festival, and he wished in hindsight that he'd put two beers on. This place is a bit bigger than it looks, and there were quite a few drinkers in for a Monday afternoon. I was directed to the Black Rock, a few paces up the back street, which I've been to many times, but I went anyway. It would have been rude not to.

I wasn't expecting much from this pub in a back alley with the outside looking more like a war zone. but was pleasantly surprised to find a little drinkers' pub, well-populated and with a couple of decent ales at silly (in a good way) prices. The decor doesn't add much, looking like amateur DIY, but there are some nice beer-related photos round the walls and a little drinking yard out the back. The locals looked a bit grumpy but the barman was friendly enough. The cask ales were from Yorkshire Heart and in good nick.

A small locals local. L-shaped inside and friendly enough. As noted its a fairly basic place but isn't the worst you're going to get in Wakefield. 3 handpulls with John Smiths Cask and Old Mill on.

Basic but welcoming. A drinkers pub. Always enjoy my visits. Worth searching it out

Just a quick pint, then I'm off left this review about The Ale House

Somewhat hidden away in a back lane, this is a compact two-room affair with a basic look as befits its name (although the decor is lighter than expected). Quite busy on a Saturday afternoon, but a mixed clientele and a good-natured atmosphere. Two older groups were playing lively games of dominoes, several screens were showing (silent) sport and some background music could just about be heard. Three handpumps on the brick-built counter, offering John Smith's Cask, Stancil No. 7 (remarkably priced at just £2.00) and Old Rosie cider.
