This pub has a similar layout to most high street ‘spoons, being a relatively narrow fronted conversion which has been considerably extended and/or opened up to the rear. It has the usual row of tall tables/tall stools running down the centre of the room, plus sufficient normal tables and chairs for those wanting to eat, but many more armchairs than you normally expect to see in a ‘spoons. There is an unusual feature down at the back – an open, circular coal effect fire, with a hood above it of course, surrounded by high sided bucket armchairs and low tables. For some reason I sat at one of these, but found it a bit like lying in a bath. I couldn’t reach my beer, nor had enough room for my arms to be able move to write in my notebook. I should have known better – I had to move.
It’s OK in here. If you know what ‘spoons are like you won’t be surprised.

I had a much better visit today when all four pints tried were in great nick. The prices are 50p a pint dearer than my local Spoons but the presence of Dark Star Revelation and Westerham Audit Ale more than made up for that. Other beers tried were Rooster's YPA and Naylor's Citradelica.
Rating increased from 5 to 8.

This is a 2003 conversion of the old Twickenham Post Office and is a Lloyds No 1 rather than a JDW. No doubt the good folk of Twickenham now have to queue in some poky little shop with a tiny Post Office counter to buy a stamp or whatever.
Unusually, but not uniquely for a Spoons this place has Sky sports, not something that appeals to me at all. I'm glad I was here in daytime when they had the usual subtitled news on.
It's GBG listed and with 12 handpumps to choose from my hopes were high. There was GK Abbot and IPA (no Ruddles) and despite two uninvited guests of Doombar and London Pride, the rest was an interesting selection. Sadly Oakham Attila was Available Soon but then there was Adnam's Broadside, Hawkshead Cumbrian 5 Hop, Dark Star Hylder Blonde, Twickenham Naked Ladies and Yakima Valley, Westerham Audit Ale and Tillingbourne AONB.
I went for the Cumbrian 5 Hop (£2.65) which was not clear and did not have the big hit of hops that I had encountered on previous tastings, all in all rather disappointing. Apart from the better than average beer selection this place is nothing more than a standard Spoons with Sky Sports. It's more expensive than most Spoons outside Central London. I may have just got unlucky with the Cumbrian 5 Hop but have to mark it down as a result.

This is a deep Wetherspoons with the usual long bar down one side, a row of chandeliers over the bar and three banks of four handpumps, impressively all occupied except one "coming soon" leaving seven guests. My Tillingbourne Falls Gold was top notch at £2.65 less my CAMRA 50p voucher.
The pub is heavily rugby themed as you may expect in Twickenham with framed photographs, newspaper clippings, signed shirts and rugby balls on display. The far end of the bar has a return area called "Harlequins Corner".
Mixed seating including a slightly raised area and a hidden away bit with two sofas behind a pillar, décor as well as the contemporary rugby paraphernalia includes stuff about Rugby School and William Webb-Ellis himself. There is a central area with a large circular open grate which I expect is a destination seat area in winter, there is also something I've not seen in a 'spoons before, a beer suggestion post box.
I don't know the previous use of this building, the stonework above the exterior doors has the ER and feathers engraved so perhaps the original Police Station or maybe a Post Office. It would be nice to find out. Certainly one of the better of the JDW chain. There is outdoor seating to the rear.

The 'William Webb Ellis'...(something to do with rugby...!) is a good pub. With a rather long bar, and with sufficient staff you shouldn't have to wait too long to get served. I found the staff efficient, if lacking in personality somewhat - but that was mainly because they didn't look old enough to BE in a pub, let alone working there! (Say it how it is TJ...!) But I like WWE, and I will always pop in when passing to or from the railway station, for a quick aperitif. One word of warning... WATCH OUT for the Everest climb up the stairs to the toilets! After a few ESB's...you won't make it down safely...!!! :o(

Large and comfortable Wetherspoon's pub selling a good range of real ales including the local Twickenham ales brews. The focal point is a large coal effect fire which is welcoming on a cold winters day

This isn't a typical wetherspoons with its many plasma screens and grand rather than drinking hanger décor. As you would expect, the beer is cheap and nearing its sell by date and the staff are young and still finding their personalities.
There is a circular fireplace towards the rear of the pub that is surrounded by sofas, but although this is a large pub there isn't that much seating. There is also a small beer garden to keep the smokers off the high street.
This is certainly not the worst Spoons I have ever been in.

Not overly-inspiring Wetherspoons (Lloyd's no.1). Lots of red in evidence. Usual real ale suspects, with a Twickenham on as guest.
