The highlight of this pub is the setting,in a quiet corner of The New Forest, where wild ponies mingle with hikers, and horse riders pop in for a pint.Lots of dog walkers in the area and the interior is dog friendly despite the focus on food.
This is a brew pub and the kit is visible from a large glass window to the left of the bar.The interior is rather sterile with pine flooring throughout,a few settles close to the bar but a large rear dining area which would be typical in any pubco establishment. It may be worth booking if you want one of the tables with a good view of the countryside, all the prime spots had reserved notices on my weekend visit.
There is a large menu and several daily specials, the meals are hearty pub grub style, some dishes genuinely huge so a good place to take on fodder.Mains vary from £8 to around £15,but sandwiches and other snacks are also served.
Owned by Wadsworth, two of their ales featured on my trip,6X and Henry's IPA while there were four from the pubs home brew namely Muddy Boot ,a good dark mild,Tom's Tipple,Red White & Brew, and New Forest Gold .The last two were a shade cloudy and lifeless ,I can only assume they don't travel well !There is not as much focus on ale as there is on serving food, which is after all what most punters are here for.
I didn't find the pub as memorable as the location, and was hoping for a more authentic package than that served up by Wadsworth.
